Adaptations
Broad triangular pectoral fins generate lift during efficient swimming, while paired cephalic lobes guide plankton-rich water toward the mouth. Gill plates filter small prey, and a large brain supports complex navigation and flexible behavior.
Behavior and daily life
Giant mantas follow changing concentrations of zooplankton and may roll, loop, or form feeding chains where food is dense. They also visit cleaning stations where small reef fish remove parasites from the skin and gill area.

Targeted fisheries, bycatch, entanglement, vessel strikes, and trade in gill plates threaten a species with very low reproductive output. Long-distance movement means protection at one aggregation site cannot cover the whole life cycle.
The pattern of dark spots on a manta ray's pale underside is individually distinctive and can be used for photographic identification.
